Navigating Motion Sickness During Cruises: A Personal Journey

Ever since my first pregnancy, motion sickness has become an unwelcome companion during my travels. Whether it’s getting car sick from reading, feeling airsick during turbulence, or succumbing to seasickness on a cruise, motion discomfort has become a frequent challenge. Despite my love for vacations and cruising, the fear of being seasick often cast a shadow on my enthusiasm.

Having taken shorter cruises before, I managed the symptoms with over-the-counter Dramamine. Following the instructions diligently, I took it at regular intervals, even when not feeling nauseous. Additionally, I always kept a prescription for nausea handy as a precaution. However, on a recent cruise with an at-sea day, I experienced mild nausea right before disembarking, fortunately avoiding the worst of it on land.

Anticipating a 7-night cruise with multiple at-sea days, I sought a more reliable solution. Consulting my primary care doctor, I discussed the need for a temporary remedy to ensure an enjoyable experience without the looming threat of seasickness. She prescribed a patch, to be placed behind my ear every three days, starting before boarding and lasting a day or two after debarkation. The patch, conveniently flesh-colored, proved effective.

Throughout the cruise, I sailed smoothly without the usual bouts of nausea. While the final full day saw rough seas, I maintained my equilibrium, not needing to resort to either Dramamine or nausea medicine. However, I did notice some side effects, such as dehydration. Staying hydrated with bottled water in our stateroom helped alleviate this. Towards the end of the trip, I experienced dry eyes, making it challenging to read certain things. While a minor inconvenience, my eyesight returned to normal shortly after the cruise.

In conclusion, I would readily use the patch again for longer cruises, ensuring an enjoyable experience. For shorter cruises, maintaining my usual regimen of having Dramamine on hand remains a reliable strategy. Always remember, these are personal experiences, and it’s crucial to consult your healthcare provider for advice tailored to your specific health needs. Happy cruising!
