Getting There

Heart Montego Bay Sign

Jamaica is easily accessible by air or cruise ship. Major airports include Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay and Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) in Kingston. Once you arrive, taxis and minibuses are convenient and safe options for getting around. Be sure to use official taxis operated by JUTA or JCAL to ensure your safety and avoid scams. Many resorts offer transportation to/from the airport and you can also upgrade to private transportation before leaving so you have nothing to worry about when arriving.

Language and Culture

English is the official language, while Patois, a Jamaican Creole dialect, is widely spoken. Immerse yourself in the vibrant Jamaican culture, known for its friendly people, infectious music, and delicious cuisine. Bring home some of the Jamaican carefree vibe!

Climate

The year-round average daytime temperatures are 86°F. While the rainy season lasts from April to October, the island remains warm and sunny throughout the year. The driest and coolest months, January to April, are considered the high season. When the rain does come, Jamaicans refer to it as liquid sunshine and there are regular instances of short rains in the afternoon that clear up rather quickly. Be sure to pay attention when reserving your dates to avoid hurricane season if that is a concern.

Currency and Tipping

The Jamaican Dollar (JMD) is the local currency, but US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas. Tipping is customary, with a typical range of 10-15% on certain resort properties. If staying at a Sandals or Beaches resort, tipping is against Sandals and Beaches policy for most staff on property.

Electricity and Essentials

Type A and Type B plugs with 110V supply voltage and 50Hz are your standard outlets. Remember to pack essentials like sunscreen, bug spray, light clothing, and comfortable shoes. For water activities, bring water shoes, and consider a reusable straw and insulated mug to reduce waste and enjoy your drinks longer.

Unforgettable Experiences

There are is a variety of exciting activities to suit every interest. Explore the lush Blue Mountains, raft down the Martha Brae River, conquer Dunn’s River Falls, or escape on a thrilling catamaran ride. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the vibrant reggae and dancehall music scene, or attend one of the island’s famous Carnival celebrations.
